The closing of the past school year and beginning of the new year provided an opportunity for USD 250 to review a number of its programs while also considering ongoing upgrades.
Assistant Superintendent Brian Biermann noted that the district has just wrapped up its first year of offering a virtual school through Greenbush, which presents ongoing opportunities for USD 250.
“Currently there are 40 districts in this virtual learning partnership,” Biermann said. “Greenbush bills us $2,000 per kid and we get the difference.”
He said a major advantage of offering that type of program locally is that students are required to come to the school physically to take state assessments and finals, meaning area students who may have been enrolled in virtual programs in the Kansas City or Lawrence areas now have a local option.
Biermann said in the first year USD 250 educated seven students in grades 9-12.
“We are expanding this year to K-12,” he said. “In this program I know we’re going to have several middle school kids and even some elementary.”
